The FOR-SITE Foundation was launched in San Francisco in 2003 to encourage the development of new work for exhibition in public venues. The FOR-SITE Foundation was launched in San Francisco in 2003 to encourage the development of new work for exhibition in public venues. In the face of new opportunities and challenges in the contemporary art world, FOR-SITE continues to evolve through programs and strategic partnerships that encourage the public to enter the burgeoning discourse on art about place. FOR-SITE further supports understanding and appreciation of art about place through its education program, which is designed to enrich the learning experience of graduate-level art, architecture, and design students.

The Foundation maintains a 50-acre residency site ten minutes from the historic gold-mining town of Nevada City. Artist residencies and education programs are offered at the site throughout the year. FOR-SITE's program of exhibitions and commissioned works in the Presidio of San Francisco was launched in 2008 with the creation of Spire by artist Andy Goldsworthy. The partnership with the Presidio Trust has continued with Presidio Habitats and Goldsworthy's Wood Line, and the Foundation is currently in dialogue with the Trust regarding future projects for the Presidio.

The FOR-SITE Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c) 3 organization. It is governed by a six-person board of directors and is supported by contributions from individuals and foundations.
