SOUNDplay is a meeting point for experimentation in sound art and new media encouraging new avenues for exploration.
"In a world where technological advancement is seen as being the way to move forward, sound artists are continually challenged to reevaluate their artistic practice in the light of changing technologies. This year's SOUNDplay uses the theme of ecology as a starting point for exploring new approaches to artistic creation as artists play with the possibilities of sound in relation to other artistic media and sensory experiences." Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art.
Located at the Artscape Wychwood Barns, the Gladstone Hotel and Yonge-Dundas Square, SOUNDplay 2009 includes multi-media performances, installations, workshops and videomusic screenings and involves co-productions with Contact Contemporary Music, Pleasure Dome and CONCRETE. Featured are duos Pierre Hébert & Stefan Smulovitz, Debashis Sinha & Yosuhiro Morinaga, Olivier Girouard & Marie Côté, along with works by Jane Tingley, Jean Piché, Nancy Tobin, and performances by the Contact Contemporary Music Ensemble as well as a video screening of animation works by Toronto artists curated by Nick Fox-Grig (Pleasure Dome). Another highlight is a special halloween installation at the barns called Sounds Scary.
