Joel Schlotterer

After earning a BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 2001, Joel Schlotterer worked as a freelance illustrator but he eventually shifted his focus to fine art. Since Schlotterer's first solo show in 2005, he has shown in several galleries primarily in Baltimore and Kansas City. In 2008, Schlotterer was featured at Peregrine Honig's Fahrenheit Gallery in Kansas City's acclaimed Crossroads Art District and has since given a lecture at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, participated in Artist INC and began a new body of work.

I make paintings of lost memory from found family photos. The images are candid and striking, flashes from the subconscious are frozen into domestic myth. Etched patterns quilt the painting like a blanket, holding together the layers of meaning. The subjects radiate the etched patterns, revealing their spirit, echoing attitudes and emotions while dematerializing their form. I hope to connect the languages of the intellect and intuition in image, illuminating the dynamic disposition of perception.
