Just a guy with a blog (or five) and a love of film, liquids and words. Like WSB, I eat images. Like everybody else, I keep getting older; I just happen to write about it, from a particular angle, on the... [more]

Just saw this image in this latest BLDGBLOG post, stolen from this flickr user and I had to share it here. The light in California sure is different. I miss that in a different way than I miss the vegetables. San Francisco is often overcast but the sunlight fills the sky with air unlike in New York where summer sun seems to weigh because of both the humidity and the smog. The air feels more liquid on the gold coast. Here in New York it's almost malleable. What makes this image funny is that it pushes the Cali sky into a form more like New York. Also, it should be said, it's a fake effect. The polaroid was clearly snapped after dark, as we see the fluorescent lights burning, so we know that the emulsion's burn is an after effect.

Now imagine this boxy thing out in the open, on a grass-covered terrace, overlooking some water. And think of the fresh fish with capers you'd be eating on top of it underneath the overhang of a tree. Sounds like heaven to me.

International Film

In Claire Denis' little-seen (at least in America) 1996 film 'Nénette et Boni' we see the local baker's wife flirt with just about everybody (and enter the fantasies of Boni, via diary). Here, she plays a little game with Vincent Gallo's sailor to the tune of "God only knows" by the Beach Boys. Valeria Bruni Tedeschi eases into the "alluring" type so effortlessly, it appears, that her coy eye-jabs across the negative space to Gallo off screen come off as innocent when scored to this syrupy song.

Over at my home-base blog, VINLY IS HEAVY, I put together a little interview with my friends about their pet repertory project, Metro Classics. What's Metro Classics? It's a nine-week run of classic films hand picked by Mike and Sean. This calendar is organized around the theme of adaptations. Read the interview by clicking this link.
