Stephan von Huene was born in Los Angeles in 1932 as the son of Baltic-German emigrants. He studied free art and art history at the University of California Los Angeles and the Chouinard Art Institute, among other places. In 1971 he began his ong teaching activity at the California Institute of the arts, Los Angeles; from 1979, he accepted numeros lectureships at European art academies, and in 1980 he moves to Germany where he soon settled in Hamburg. His interests now lay in the interaction of visual- sculptural and acoustic effects in which he involved the spectator and listener as the creator of impulses. His aucoustic objects and automats such as Drum and Text Tones soon attracted attention. His art were a highlight of the biennale in venice 1995.

Since the opening of the Galerie der Gegenwart, part of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Text and Tones is one of the major works in the contemporary collection of the Kunsthalle and is still regarded by the public as one of the most popular works.

Until his death 2000 he worked and lived in Hamburg.
