"They say my flow is crazy and I can spit/ and I rap as if I had a dick/ bitches is bad but I'm that bitch/ listen, I'm so above the average."
I'm from There's Something About Remy (2006)
So spoke Remy Ma, originally Remy Martin until the congac sued for exclusive rights to the name in 2005. But no matter, Remy had already come to the fore as truly one of the baddest (feminist) bitches of hip hop. The only female member of Terror Squad, she dominated the airwaves all summer of 2004 with the group's hit banger Lean Back. But it's the legendary freestyling begun in her high school cafeteria that set her career in motion, generating a cult following including fans like late Terror Squad kingpin Big Pun, who mentored Remy during her teens in the Bronx and introduced her to the Hip Hop industry.
Despite gale force wit (better evinced by her rhymes than signature two-tone hairdo), Remy's greatly anticipated solo debut There's Something About Remy (2006) was plagued by a mismanaging label from which she eventually emancipated herself. Many times delayed, There's Something About Remy was ultimately ill-promoted, and Remy's launch into the mainstream continues to be somewhat stunted. A modest commercial success, the album, featuring hits like Conceited and Whuteva, did express Remy's prowess as a rapper in league with the best of any gender, and certainly in direct competition with rarely challenged rap divas like Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown. Sadly, as Remy prepares for a groundbreaking new project--the all-girl rap supergroup Head Bitches in Charge, with Jacki-O and Shawnna--as of July, 2007, she faces attempted murder charges for a shooting incident outside a Manhattan nightclub.
