[more]A reflective or dream-like melody, a prelude filled with bittersweet melancholy, the surrender to a nationalist impulse: all are quintessential Chopin. In his short life, Frédéric Chopin moved from the fashionable salons of Paris into history, as one of the greatest composers of music for piano. Chopin's mastery of melody is evident in his glorious, short, contemplative nocturnes, which suggest the workings of intimate internal processes. The compositions move ever forward; they're slowly snowballing revelations. Gradual tempos build to plateaus, where we absorb new feeling and experience. We're propelled forward by overlapping waves of discovery. The voice of the brilliant preludes, on the other hand, is instantly declarative. Often melancholy or dramatic, the preludes move at a quicker tempo and with greater assertiveness than the nocturnes. They race to conclude but have found enlightenment even before they begin. Chopin's "Prelude No. 24 in D-minor," for instance, sweeps forward aggressively, even perhaps defiantly, collecting confidence and magnitude as it goes. And then there are pieces that pay tribute to the composer's Polish heritage. His mazurkas and polonaises are celebratory dances written in both slower and quicker tempos. These again have a confident air, remembering triumphs, heroics, and celebrations. Here Chopin moves out of self-reflection and into a joyous public space. Whether a nocturne, prelude, waltz, ballad, etude, or sonata, Chopin's music is mobile, transporting. It moves from the salons of Paris to the villages of Poland, from the realm of the internal to that of experience and enlightenment. His compositions transcend culture and remember culture. Some works are quests, others destinations. Like his legacy, the great Romantic travels vast distances.
