At first you ask yourself, "Is this MTV?" The jerky camera movements seem strangely familiar, but then, things get funny. Really funny. You settle into your seat, one hand in your popcorn and the other around your sweetie, and enjoy "Mad Cows." This amusing, "family-fun" movie was written and directed by Sara Sugarman, a filmmaker rookie with a wacky, light-hearted sense of humor. Based on a best-selling novel by Kathy Lette, "Mad Cows" is the story of the madness of motherhood, or more specifically, Australian motherhood. Maddy is in the pen for credit-card fraud and her partner Gillian is concerned only with her shopping excursions at Gucci and Prada. The film wittily follows the odd couple as they challenge London's bureaucracy and evade a psychotherapist, a lustful lawyer, and Maddy's ex. The movie looks at England's stereotypes from an outsider's perspective; as Sugarman puts it, "England is the mad island and the loud-mouthed Australian is the voice of reason." For years before the "Mad Cows" release, Sugarman was whole-heartily involved in the film industry; she played Abby National in "Sid and Nancy," received great reviews for her short film "Valley Girls," acted in the British television series "Grange Hill," and directed "Pavarotti in Dad's Room" a coming-of-age story about a young girl mixed up in a crowd of boozers and bakers.
