[more]John Kameel Farah is a Toronto-based pianist, composer, electronic musician and artist. Having studied composition and piano performance at the University of Toronto, (where he received the Glenn Gould Composition award twice during his studies), he later went on to study privately with Terry Riley in California in 1999.
In 1998, however, he performed the complete works for piano by Arnold Schoenberg. This is only one of many events that would culminate in Farah being called the city’s best pianist of 2006 by Toronto’s NOW magazine.
Farah is active as a solo pianist, and composer, and has presented many of his own works for a variety of musical ensembles. He now focuses primarily on his own creative hybrid of free improvisation, contemporary composition and electronic music. His performances magically and artfully blend various genres including jazz, techno, electro-acoustic, Middle Eastern modes, drum and bass and ambient minimalism, taking the audience for a wonderful ride that includes the DJs dance club and the art house concert hall.
John Farah performs regularly in Toronto, and has performed his music at festivals and venues across Europe, USA, Canada, the Middle East, South Korea and Mexico. In 1999 and 2002, he visited the Edward Said National Conservatory in the West Bank, giving performances and master classes in Ramallah, East Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
