Leigh Bowery was a performance artist, club promoter, fashion designer and instrumental figure in the London/New York club scene of the 80s and 90s. His spirit lives on in provocateurs like Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, James St. James, and Lady Gaga.

Bowery created costumes and performances that combined BDSM with body art, restricting and exaggerating his zaftig form. He sang in several bands, opened several scandalous nightclubs, and modeled for the painter Lucian Freud. He died of an AIDS related illness in 1994.
