Amon Tobin (born 1972) is a highly regarded Brazilian electronic musician and DJ.  Although Tobin is largely credited with helping to create the emerging “trip hop” (see below) genre in the late 1990s, he is also a multi-faceted sound designer and composer-part of his work includes creating sound and music for video games such as Ubisoft’s critically-acclaimed Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.  

Since 1996 he has released seven major studio albums under the London-based Ninja Tune record label where he is considered one of their most successful artists. Most of his albums feature his particular genius with sampling and remixing, but his album Foley Room is entirely  based on field-recorded sounds. His music has been used in many international films including The Italian Job and 21. A great quote from Guido Farnell of InTheMix.com: Tobin has “taken the art (of sampling) to new and dizzying heights.”

Trip-hop is a music genre also known as the Bristol sound because it is often applied to a musical trend that grew out of England’s hip hop and house scenes in the mid-1990s. The style is characterized by the reliance on breakbeats and a sample-heavy, often moody sound. Artists such as Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Thievery Corporation and Amon Tobin as well as the UK’s Gorillaz, Howie B., and Morcheeba are associated with this sound.
