[more]Wim Vandekeybus is a director, choreographer, actor and photographer. His contact with animals in their natural environment as a young boy had a great emotional impact on both him and his work. Animals, their movements, their instinctive reactions and their trust in their own physical power are often integrated into his performances.
Wim toured with Jan Fabre from 1985-1986, at which time he withdrew for several months in Madrid with a group of young, inexperienced dancers calling themselves "Ultima Vez" to work on his first production.
Since then he has created nearly 20 performances with changing international casts and has made many film and video productions. From 1993-1999 he was artist in residence at the Royal Flemish Theatre. In 1997 he worked again with Fabre in "Body, Body on the Wall..." a solo written and directed by Fabre for Vandekeybus.
The death of his father strongly influenced “Inasmuch as Life is borrowed...” (2000), in which life and death became the central themes of the performance and short-film. For "Scratching the Inner Fields" (2001) Vandekeybus collaborated with the Flemish author Peter Verhelst, a collaboration that was continued for the dance film "Blush" (2002) and "Sonic Boom," a co-production with the Dutch theatre company Toneelgroep Amsterdam (2003). Vandekeybus created a solo for Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in 2002.
