Liz Jaff creates installations and objects which reflect her personal impression of space. Through abstraction and repetition of architectural and natural forms, she makes environments that convey the specific feeling and character of a place. The elusiveness and interpretive qualities of memory are used to process her experience in lieu of documentation. Paper as the primary medium creates a sense of the ephemeral and ultimate intangibilty of memory. The technique of folding is used often in the work as a way to investigate how a two dimensional plane can be manipulated to define three dimensional space. Her interest in articulating memory has led her recently to making quilts. Quilting historically is a format of necessity yet also expresses ones personal impressions and cultural experience. The process of piecing cut fabric together is similar to how Liz Jaff creates and exhibits her paper works and drawings, in individual parts that are assembled as a larger whole. In all of these cases, the ordinary, paper and fabric, are transformed into something new and often unexpected. [show less]
