Poet and translator Heather McHugh was raised in Virginia and attended Harvard University, where she studies with Robert Lowell. She published her first book of poetry, Dangers, in 1977. Since then, she has published A World of Difference (1981), To the Quick (1987), Shades (1988), and The Father of Predicaments (2001). Her book Hinge & Sign: Poems 1968-1993 (1994) was named "Notable Book of the Year" by the New York Times Book Review and her 2004 book of poetry Eyeshot was nominated for a Pulitzer. McHugh's forthcoming volume of poetry is titled Upgraded to Serious (2009). McHugh has received multiple National Endowment for the Arts grants, a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, and, most recently a Griffin Poetry Prize for the volume of Paul Celan poems she and Nikolai Popov translated. McHugh teaches in the MFA Program at Warren Wilson College and at the University of Washington in Seattle. [show less]
