Carla Duarte is an artist living in Chicago, Illinois. She received her MFA in 2009 from the Fiber & Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She works individually, as well, within the collaborative known as “Work-In-Progress”with Lia Rousset and Amber Ginsburg. Carla practices performing integrated experiences within society for a greater comprehension to the self in relation with others. Her individual work studies the relationship between the performance of the body in space and its relation to locating culture. Considering the trajectory rather than the destination, self-geography and mobility remain an open experience to question and embody. Recreating everyday gestures as self-reflexive acts, the energy exerted to sustain and integrate into everyday society becomes more realized socially, spiritually, and materially. Within her collaborative practices, her process explores the reproaching and reactivation of the everyday, where intention is given to the awareness of use and reuse of skill, material, and dialogue. Creating installations that suggest involvement through hands-on craft, formal choices are used to encourage activity and contemplation. Generating spaces designed for a shared experience, people are given the opportunity to consider themselves and each other as creative agents. By performing physical labor, a hands-on investigation into production becomes visible and questions our role in our surroundings. [show less]
