Created by Todd Zuniga, Elizabeth Koch, and Dennis DiClaudio – the forces behind the phenomenal literary journal Opium –, Literary Death Match has posed more threats to the established ethos of literary readings since its founding in 2006 than perhaps any other reading series in the history of this distinct class of event. And while it has perhaps gained most notice for its more whimsical and charming elements, it is ultimately the extraordinary caliber of the readers and judges – among them Rivka Galchen, Ben Greenman, Deb Olin Unferth, Heidi Julavits, Tom Perrotta, Jonathon Keats, Tao Lin, Daniel Handler, and any number more of the established and up-and-coming writers that Opium champions – that distinguishes LDM from more run-of-the mill readings.
