MGMT was formed in 2002 at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut during Ben Goldwasser's and Andrew VanWyngarden's freshman year. The band was originally called "The Management but shortened their name to "MGMT" after discovering another artist using it. MGMT's sound has been situated at the intersection between punk-inflected art rock and pop music with psychedelic overtones. They experimented with noise rock and electronica before settling on what David Marchese of Spin calls "their current brand of shape-shifting psychedelic pop." MGMT has toured extensively in support of the Time to Pretend EP, opening for indie rock band Of Montreal. [show less]
