Marc Jacobs is perhaps the best known, and most celebrated American fashion designer of his generation. After growing up in New Jersey, Jacobs attended Parsons The New School for Design in Manhattan, where he was awarded the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award in 1984 for his design work. Jacobs also designed and sold a line of hand-knit sweaters while still a student at Parsons. Soon after graduating, Jacobs was made creative director of Perry Ellis. His controversial 'grunge' collection led to his dismissal from the company in 1993. Marc Jacobs had been designing under his own name since 1986, however, with Robert Duffy taking responsablility for the business aspects of the company. The Marc Jacobs line continues to be successful today, with shoes, handbags, perfume and jewelry being produced in addition to clothing. In 1997, Jacobs was made creative director of French luxury brand Louis Vuitton. He has revamped the label with his interesting collaborations with artists like Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami, and Richard Prince. Marc Jacobs is perhaps the best known and most celebrated designer of his generation. His designs, often inspired by vintage clothing from the forties to the eighties, is playful, quirky and very cool.
