EDMUNDO SANTOS. Let’s talk about Edmundo Santos. Hispanic Americans, strangely enough, know almost nothing about him. He is, however, one of the biggest Celebrities in the World. Those of us in the animation business know him well. His daughter Diana, son Tony and friends all indicate he was very handsome. They, in fact, say he was as handsome as Rudolph Valentino. Mr. Santos lived during the Era of Glorious Technicolor when the Gods and Goddesses of Cinema were rocking Theaters with their Comedies and Tragedies. One might ask: “Who was he? I have never heard of that man!” Edmundo Santos, for a start, was one of the closer friends of Walt Disney and his work influenced Disney movies remarkably. He used to work for a radio station in Tijuana on a program entitled “La Sartén y la Cuchara”, which means “The Pan and the Spoon”. On one occasion he used the microphone to make remarks about Disney’s lyrics indicating they were badly written. He went on to say they were “Out of rhythm with bad rimes and misplaced musical accents”. Disney Studios then, in Burbank (California) called him and gave him an appointment. When he arrived for the meeting he said “I entered a great hall and a man was seated in front of a piano waiting for me”. “Then, another man appeared!” He began the meeting by saying: “I’m tired of hearing your comments about my movies”. “Here…!” He shoved papers at me! “It’s a score about an adaptation of our new production which is called ‘Pinocchio’!”. That man was Walter Elias Disney. Since that great introduction, they became very good friends. Walt used to give Edmundo the nickname, “Panchous” because of the movie “The three Caballeros” and “Saludos Amigos” for the character “Pancho Pistolas”. Those who were aware, confirmed what Walt Disney used to say. “He does better adaptations in Spanish than my original recordings”. When “Cinderella”, (Cenicienta) was produced, the recording was made in Churubusco Azteca in Mexico City. Evangelina Elizondo was chosen for the Spanish voice and Gene Armstrong from Burbank was there to supervise. Grabaciones y Doblajes SA was open as, another genius, Francisco Colmenero, whom I personally met, entered the room. I was introduced to him by Ms. Patricia Millet Fuentes de Senderos, who was President of the National Film board of Mexico. She gave me, Daniel Lizzama, the first opportunity to break down walls to show business. Roy Edward Disney, the son of Disney’s brother Roy, was the best man at Edmundo Santos’ son’s wedding. His name is Tony Santos.
