Like many composers, Giacomo Puccini was born into a family of musicians who actively encouraged his musical talent from the time he was a child. Although Puccini's father, Michele, died when he was six, the boy felt much of his influence at the Istituto Musicale where the father had taught, and where the son studied as a teenager. When he performed his first composition in April of 1877, no one in town was particularly shocked at what they heard -- it was to be expected from the son of Michele Puccini. The young Puccini went on to accomplish far more than had his father or his ancestors; he composed some of the best-loved operas of all time. One of the foremost Romantic composers, Puccini became known for the dramatic staging and gorgeous, lush vocal lines and musical orchestration in his operas. The operas that remain most popular to this day are "La Boheme," "Tosca," and "Madama Butterfly," but many other works by Puccini are performed frequently. Although some people believe that Puccini lived in the shadow of his Romantic contemporary, Giuseppe Verdi, it seems that both men managed to carve out distinct niches within opera. One thing is certain: there has never been a young soprano who, when browsing through repertoire possibilities, has not dreamed of performing "O Mio Babbino Caro," "Un Bel di Vedremo," "Quando Me'n Vo," or another of the haunting, floating, beautiful arias of Puccini.
