James Baldwin, one of the most prominent figures in American literature, rose to the highest of literary heights from the most trying of circumstances. Born into a poor Harlem family, he had to contend with an abusive stepfather. Despite the deplorable quality of Harlem's public schools, Baldwin managed to become an excellent student and avid reader. When his stepfather died, the 19-year-old James became the family's breadwinner. The strongest influence in his youth was the fiery Pentecostal Church. Though he later rejected the Church, he never gave up his spirituality: biblical themes and imagery abound in his novels. For example, the religious agonies of John Grimes in "Go Tell It On The Mountain" (1953) are largely autobiographical. In the years before his novels were published, Baldwin spent much of his time exploring the jazz and art scene in Greenwich Village. He also came to terms with his homosexuality, which became a major theme in his writing (most notably in "Giovanni's Room"). At the age of 24, Baldwin moved to Paris to join his mentor Richard Wright. It was as an expatriate that Baldwin found his authorial voice; his words took on the glow of painful truth, sharpened to heart-piercing points. In 1957, stirred by a desire to fight as well as write for his cause, Baldwin returned to the U.S. as a civil rights activist. During the years that followed, Baldwin's work gained prominence. His political journalism, as well as his "Notes of a Native Son," centered on the theme of racial equality. His novels worked at a personal level, delving into issues of family, identity, and sexuality, as well as social injustice. Baldwin eventually returned to France, where he died of cancer in 1987.
