A Queens native committed to filming the outer boroughs of New York, Gray's career, while picking up steam recently, has produced only four features in 15 years. Each of his first three films is ostensibly a "crime picture" but at heart they are films of family, which proves Gray's work bears as much inheritance from Francis Ford Coppola as from Martin Scorsese, one of his most vocal supporters. Praised for its continued "classicist" style, his newest film as of this writing, TWO LOVERS, stars Joaquin Phoenix, as do the previous films, THE YARDS (2000) and WE OWN THE NIGHT (2007), and Gwenyth Paltrow -- but this time the "subject" is "romance." However, again, the film is equally about how a family stays a net as it is about how a man makes himself a desirable and capable lover. He is currently in production on an adaptation of David Grann's THE LOST CITY OF Z, to star Brad Pitt. [show less]
