An author known for her writings on gendered language, literary theory, and social and political issues, Cixous revolutionized feminist studies in 1975 with two important essays, "Laughter of the Medusa" and "The Newly-born Woman." She is a professor of English and women's studies at the University of Paris VIII, where she is also the founding director of the university's Center for Research on Feminist Studies, established in 1974 as Europe's first doctoral program in women's studies.
