This brief outline of Poul Gernes life could hardly have been put together during his lifetime. For reason of principle, this artist did not wish to be portrayed with any kind of biography. For Gernes, it was only the work that mattered. According to this thinking, the person behind the work was irrelevant to the case.

Poul Gernes was born 1925 in Copenhagen. Follwing his schooling as a lithographer, he began as an autodidact of painting, designed prototypes for lamps, furniture and tapestries. In 1961 he founded the Eks-skolen (Experimental School of Art) with the art historian Troels Andresen. Since the seventies he has embellished over 80 building interiors with his concepts of coulor. During the years 1985-1991 he also worked as a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen. Following his death in 1996, his work became to a wider public outside Denmark.
