Emil Nolde Overview

Emil Nolde was born as Emil Hansen in the village Nolde in Germany August 7, 1867.From 1884 till 1888 Nolde studied to become a furniture designer and a woodcuttler a several furniture factoris in Germany. This led him to become an art teacher at the art school in Karlsruhe from 1892-1897 nolde became art teacher at the art school of StGallen /Switzerland.Nold was an selftaught artist and he soon grew to an avant-gardist painter. From 1906 - 1907 he was a member of teh artist group the bridge. During the goverment of the NS his work was forbidden and he was not allowed to paint after 1941. His work was condemned as degenerate, durig this period he painted many paintings while in hiding called"unpainted pictures ". Noldes work includes color lithograph, woodcuts, watercolor paintings. Emil Nolde died April 15, 1956 in Seebuell, where now is a famous Nolde Museum.
