Max Beckmann Overview

The German painter Max Beckmann was born in Leipzig on February 12,1884.1900 he is accepted into the Weimar Art School. Among his teachers is the Norwegian painter Carl Frithjof Smith. He goes to Paris in 1903 to study at teh Academie Colarossi. As of 1904 he lives in Berlinand is awarded the honory prize of the German artis nion, which grants him a scholarship at the Villa Romana in Florence.1914 he is founding member of the Free Secession, as he is a strong advocate of teh German Impressionism.He changes his style from Impressionism to Expressionism around 1916.His artistic breakthrough commes in 1920s. Numerous exhibitions take place in big cities all over Europe.He teaches a master class at the Frankfurt Staedelschule in 1925. His success interruped when the NS take over the power in 1933.Beckmann is stigmatized as an degerenate artist he flees to Amsterdam in 1937.After the war he takes a post at the Washington University School in St. Louis in 1847 and he teaches at the Art School of the Brooklyn Museum in New York. in 1949.Max eckmann died in New York an Dezember the 27 in 1950.
