Crusade For Collecting
The Crusade for Collecting is a revivalist movement meant to encourage further public engagement with art and empower a new generation of collectors. Spontaneous pop-up galleries in cities across the USA will bring grassroots art appreciation to the streets, moving outside the traditional boundaries of the art world, and engaging those not inclined to seek out an art experience. The photography on display will be given away to those who connect with it, an act giving many their first opportunity to own original art and meant to turn on new audiences to art collecting. The Crusade provides a platform to discuss the importance of buying original art and supporting the artists who are creating it.
Join us the afternoon April 13th, in front of Photo Booth at 1193 Valencia St.

ILL Romantic New Works by Casey Gray Opening: Saturday, July 10th, 2010 from 7-11pm Show Runs Through: August 7th, 2010
White Walls is proud to present ILL Romantic: New Works by Casey Gray. ILL Romantic consists of multilayered, interconnected works that draw from a symbolic system of meaning and associations pertaining to the turmoil of the human heart. Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, July 10th, 2010, from 7-11pm.
Through a meticulous practice of hand-cut stenciling, Casey uses spray paint and various urban media techniques involving the dense layering of image, symbol and pattern to produce bold, colorful paintings that are both graphically and conceptually compelling.
His imagery is both autobiographical and universal, with much of it being drawn from his own photography as well as various media sources. The end results are brightly colored spectacles that tap into collective social consciousness while simultaneously being deeply personal.
ILL Romantic explores the dynamics of competing ideologies in a discussion of suburban romantic fantasy as a form of escapism. It stems from meditations on a myriad of concerns relating to vulnerability, attraction, repulsion, exploitation and the duality of good and evil.
Casey will earn a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in May of 2010. His works have been featured in cities across the United States including San Diego, San Francisco and the 2009 Aqua Art Fair in Miami.
The exhibit will be on display through August 7th, 2010 and is open to the public.

Fur and Feathers New Works by Chris Pugliese Opening Reception: July 120h, 2010, from 7-11 pm. Show runs through: August 7th, 2010, and is open to the public
The Shooting Gallery is proud to present Fur and Feathers: New Works by Chris Pugliese. This exhibition features traditional paintings of contemporary subject matter to celebrate nonconformity in contemporary America. Please join us for the opening reception of Fur and Feathers on Saturday, July 10th, 2010, from 7-11 pm.
Fur and Feathers comprises a series of oil paintings that combine Italian Renaissance techniques with contemporary subject matter. Eccentric fashion and style serves as a window into the alternative lifestyle choices of his portrait subjects; their fur trim, feather boas, Mohawks, smoky eyes, and black clothing signal the individual’s defiance of a conventional American mindset. Inspired by the stories and dramas of his friend’s lives, Pugliese questions America’s social expectation for a homogeneous physical appearance, lifestyle, and mindset. Chris paints subjects with rich character emanating through their clothes and expressions, yet these portraits do not encompass one individual as much as a complex set of emotions. Through his classic aesthetic, Chris equates the courage of modern day nonconformist heroes with the persecuted saints of Raphael and Caravaggio’s 19th Century paintings. Perseverance, love, and staying true to oneself are the unifying traits of each portrait in this collection. Chris chooses his models for their unorthodox dress and character. He works from life as much as possible, using his own photographs for further reference. His subject matter reflects an obsession with people watching while his form is clearly influenced by the Italian Master’s use of volume. Distinct from photorealism, this traditional style reveals angelic compassion and sweetness in the subject. Ultimately, the subject’s soft features reveal a deep desire to connect with and understand people.
Chris Pugliese’s education includes coursework at six institutions located in New York City, Philadelphia, France, and Italy. He has been teaching for the past 17 years and currently leads classes at New York Academy of Art. His solo exhibitions have been displayed in New York City galleries such as The Forbes Gallery, Arcadia Gallery, and Eleanor Ettinger Gallery, and national galleries including New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut and John Pence Gallery in San Francisco. He received awards from Art Renewal Center in 2006 and 2007 and has been published in American Artist and New York Times.
The exhibit will be on view through August 7th, 2010, and is open to the public.
