In an ongoing series, Flags wonders if a representation of the American Flag can ever be observed as simply a composition of stars and rectangles, or is the patriotic reflex always present? Will it still generate strong feelings when abstracted, obscured and recomposed? What is the threshold? In this suite, notions of patriotism wrapped up in the flag are combined with the equally nebulous meanings of the Homeland Security Terror Levels, ranging from the total paranoia of red to the serene vigilance of green.
