  • Title:
    Liberty Leading The People
  • Artist:
    Eugene Delacroix
  • Year:
  • Description:
One of the great examples of Romantic art, this work symbolizes and commemorates the July Revolution of 1830, in which Charles X, King of France, was overthrown and replaced with King Louis Phillipe. Liberty is personified at center, waving the flag and urging her devotees on to victory. Again, the concept of common people is present, and the presence of death reminds us of the sacrifices that must be made in the name of freedom.
