There is finally a piece in the THE about the parlous state of Philosophy in post-92 universities. My own institution is there (no longer accepting new students for its single honours course in 2010), but the reason given (low-recruitment) simply isn't true: some places are struggling certainly, but not everywhere. Last year, for example, we had 27 single honours students and even more combined. For a department with the equivalent of three fulltime members of staff, this is an astonishingly high number of students. Nor do we make a financial loss, quite the opposite in fact.
