Tyrone Power: Q&A with Maria Ciaccia
Tyrone Power, Nancy Kelly on the set of Jesse James (top); Power and his mother (bottom) Tyrone Power Interview – Intro How would you describe Tyrone Power the actor? How would you describe Tyrone Power the man? Tyrone Power the actor: very versatile, disciplined, hard-working, capable of doing much more than he was allowed to do throughout most of his career. Charismatic, exuded a great warmth and charm on the screen. Extremely committed to acting and mindful of his family dynasty. As a man, he was extremely passionate, down to earth, funny, generous to a fault, loyal, and nonconfrontational. He was given to some dark moods; he was unhappy about his career after the war and bitter about...
Tyrone Power II: Hollywood Career
Tyrone Power, Norma Shearer Tyrone Power I: Q&A with Maria Ciaccia Tyrone Power was a Fox contract player for nearly two decades. Were there any roles he wanted to get — whether at the studio or elsewhere — but that went to someone else? Any projects he wanted Darryl F. Zanuck to pursue, but that never came to fruition? You name it, he lost out on it. Zanuck refused to lend him out after Marie Antoinette because he had what amounted to a supporting role, and he felt that MGM had used him unfairly; however, Norma Shearer had demanded him. He was offered the role of Parris in Kings Row; Zanuck refused to loan him out. [Robert Cummings got the part.] Supposedly [...]
Tyrone Power VIII: Legacy
Tyrone Power VII: Popularity If there is a failing in name recognition, I blame Turner Classic Movies for not licensing more Fox films. People who watch Turner think that the only stars worked for MGM, WB, and RKO. In point of fact, Tyrone Power was #5 in the world — above Gable — for the Gone with the Wind year, 1939, and #2 in 1940, and unlike Errol Flynn, who only made a top box-office list once, Power stayed a mega movie star until his death, demanding a percentage of his films’ gross. If one looks at the Top Ten Reviews list, which lists actors according to box office and reviews, Power is listed as the #151st most popular actor. That [...]
Tyrone Power Interview – Intro
Among the romantic leading men of the studio era, Tyrone Power, 20th Century Fox’s top male star from the mid-’30s to the late ’40s, is my favorite. He wasn’t the best actor of the bunch — I’d say that honor belongs to Gregory Peck. He wasn’t the sexiest, either — I’d say that honor belongs to Errol Flynn. Yet, in my view Power was the one who, more than anyone else, from Clark Gable to John Payne, from Laurence Olivier to John Garfield, from John Gilbert to John Wayne, came across as genuinely warm, sensitive, and unaffected. (Ramon Novarro, of whom I’ve written a biography, also possessed most of those qualities; Novarro, however, sometimes failed in the [...]
Vacancy
By Simon Abrams Nimród Antal may not be an innovative director but he is a canny creator of endearingly sincere B-movies. Vacancy in that sense is an important though not a huge step forward from the clunky sentimentality and cloying cliches of his debut film Kontroll...

SO YOU DIDN'T GET INTO SUNDANCE...
So you didn’t get into Sundance…. I’m sorry. Trust me, I feel your pain. As a producer I’ve received both the acceptance calls as well as the rejection ones. (Actually, the rejection call is sometimes not even a call, but a form email or letter.) In some cases, I’ve known that the film probably didn’t have much of a shot, although in others, the rejection came as a shock — one that threw our director and production team into a quandary over the film’s future direction. So, what do you do if your film didn’t get into Sundance? The first thing: for a few days, forget about it. Don’t think about your film. This weekend go out to a concert, or a museum, or a park. Watch football. Probably don’t...
