bombast / theme
Bombast was the term for the cotton waste used to stuff Jacobean codpieces. Today it refers to a voice or style that tries to inflate its own importance or the significance of what it describes. So: puffery, hot air, padding, stuffing, with the added connotations of vainglory, pretentiousness, and disingenuous attempts to convey the impression of virility.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
