grotesque / theme
Distortion of face and form make for unsettling abnormality. Mockery, mimicry, and parody bulge and warp a once-familiar figure. Gargoyles gaping, half-human monsters draped like dead men, spidery gothic shadows. The grotesque is eerie, creepy, and frightful, but its crevices hide enough weird beauty or black humor, to make it not quite the stuff of horror.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
