excessive / theme
There is that which remains in its proper place, digestible, controllable, humane; and there is that which exceeds place, control, and human ability. Excessive is the sickening but too-delectable act of devouring an entire tier of wedding cake after demolishing the reception feast. It is a still life with Josephine Baker wearing Carmen Miranda's hat. It is the addition of ornament upon a thing already rich in detail, of frill upon trill upon run-on sentence. More than enough, too much, ultra-mega-super-alot; overwhelming, overflowing, overdoing. Excess may induce nausea, vomiting, fainting fits, disorientation, trembling, or satiety.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
