profane / theme
To profane is to desecrate a sanctified edifice or object. Profanity is blasphemy and cursing, but more generally, it denotes swearing of any kind. The profane is to the sacred as the demotic is to the hieratic. It is of the people, rather than of the priesthood.
Therefore iconoclastic, a movement of protest or reform, as with the translation of literary and religious texts from Greek and Latin to vernacular languages.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
