epic / theme
The epic relies on narrative technique, even when in musical or visual form, to expound upon the larger-than-life. Length, depth, complexity, and grandeur characterize the epic, which does not seek to elevate itself to alienating heights. Epic denotes a masterful treatment of the heroic and the moral. It takes the long, historical view; it exploits symbolism to the full; it sweeps, cries out with a million voices, augments color and emotion.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
