feminine / theme
A quality or label with a checkered past and an uncertain future. Feminine once escorted wiles and weaknesses to and from the lips of women's detractors. It still tends to wear colors like lavender and peach, and bears traits like softness, grace, and sweetness. It has mostly abandoned modesty, demureness, and chastity. Feminine, to its credit, is no longer a single-sex institution, and it continues to advocate community, nonviolence, and good taste.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
