smart / theme
With a certain intellectual clarity and grace, the smart forces the mind to consider a less obvious approach. It is not the brilliant; the brilliant is excessive, overflowing, a kind of intellectual sublime. The smart, on the other hand, is direct, sharp, and surprising, but it is not so startling as to be an impossible thought: it is a good thought, a better approach, the one you should have thought of but didn't.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
