quirky / theme
Plowshares twisted into corkscrews, tree-limbs gnarled into human faces, as idiosyncratic as the metaphysical poets, incongruous, rich, and strange. Agreeably eccentric, funny and clever in a mechanical, ingenious way. Naive, unimproved, marginal, frequently brilliant and droll. Think not of actors but of puppeteers, toy-makers before sculptors, and not so much landscape-painters and essayists as cartoonists and stand-up comics. Not to be trite, but with the quirky, expect the unexpected.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
