power / theme
Power can refer to the brute strength of a prize fighter, the endurance of a marathon runner, the machinations of the State, the demands of a cop, the insidious workings of knowledge, the persuasion of a well-worn skirt. The Dutch philosopher Spinoza says that power is the ability to be affected; Nietzsche says it's the expression of the will, conscious and not. Power is a complex concept open to interpretation, engagement, confrontation, undermining, reification: power is to be reckoned with.
Themes represent basic categories of thought, emotion, or value. While our assignment of themes may at times seem arbitrary or whimsical, they serve to link together artists and movements along non- hierarchial pathways. Follow the themes to look for new disciplines that share qualities with those you already like, or to open up new worlds of Art and Culture.
