The Freesound Project is an online database of free audio samples that can be borrowed, mixed and shared. The site's users provide field recordings of various sounds, building an impressive archive of Creative Commons Sampling Plus licensed audio.  Everything from billiard balls to thunderstorms and heartbeats, the site also features  both keyword and "sounds like" browsing.
