Voulkos, Inspired”

September 4 – December 6, 2013

Opening Reception: Wed, Sept 4, 6-8pm

Kala Art Institute is pleased to announce, Voulkos, Inspired – the latest off-site exhibition at Berkeley Central Arts Passage. Join us for the Opening Reception on Wednesday, September 4, 6-8pm.

Voulkos, Inspired presents the work of five artists and one collaborative duo – Double Zero, Leah Rosenberg, Maysha Mohamedi, Peter Voulkos, Randy Colosky, and Travis Meinolf. The artists' work, along with a Q&A, presents a localized engagement with the work and life of iconic Berkeley-based artist, Peter Voulkos.

Double Zero (duo Annie Vaught and Hannah Ireland) utilizes their 20 year friendship as the basis for investigating the ways they affect one another, the boundaries between themselves, and different modes of taking up space in the world. Leah Rosenberg, a painter and a pastry chef, pushes genres with a nod to function, pleasure, and the senses. Maysha Mohamedi’s large-scale paintings and smaller sculptures explode with vigorous physicality and embedded autobography. A 1997 Kala-printed edition by Peter Voulkos will be on view. Randy Colosky recalls Voulkos’ influence on his early work in ceramics as well as his current expanded sculpture practice that employs bold and playful re-tooling of materials. Travis Mienolf heeds Voulkos’ directives from a dream to “cut it up!” and presents collaboratively woven blankets – cut up, reassembled, and on-offer for free.

Voulkos, Inspired is the fourth exhibition in Kala’s new off-site exhibition series featuring artworks from Berkeley-based artists and the Kala community. Working together in the vibrant downtown Berkeley Arts District, Berkeley Central Arts Passage and Kala Art Institute are forging new connections between artists and audience.
