One of the great things about Karl Lagerfeld is how he speaks his mind - he is so direct and outrageous about his opinions. Below are some excerpts from his March 2008 interview with Prestige Magazine:
"I have no sense of time. You live the moment you live in. If you look at your own past and think it was better before than now, then you have a problem. If you say things were more elegant before, it's not true. Everything changes. You have to find your place, your space, your mood, adapt to the world you live in. You have to follow the world. The world does not follow you."
"When people talk about the good old days, I say to people, 'It's not the days that are old, it's you that's old.' I hate the good old days. What is important is that today is good. You know my favourite line in life is from a very famous Jewish German, who said, 'No credit on the past.' This is what I live with. That's a bon idée, non? This is my vision of life."
"Whatever you did, that's okay. Maybe others care about what you did, but you don't. You don't have to care, hmm? If I started to care about what I did, I would not be able to continue. I like to destroy things, houses, everything, only to rebuild. But what's funny is to rebuild and to do, not what you have done. I'm not a collector, nothing except for books, because I like information. I do things for doing. I don't do things to achieve them, no, because that way you achieve nothing."
"I'm in a permanent state of bad mood, because nothing is ever complete. I'd never carry on doing collections if I thought everything I did was great."
"I'm the most selfish person in the world."
"I don't want to have a social life. I've had enough of that in my life. It's démodé. It's another era. Perhaps people are still excited by that era, but not me. It's uninteresting today. It says nothing. It's boring, pretentious and vulgar. But you have to have a certain amount of time to yourself to be informed."
"I consider myself a kind of Ferrari, so I take care of myself."
"I hate the smell of cooking. Some people love it, but I don't care for it. I don't eat sweet things. I don't eat greasy things. And I like fish better than meat. In fact, I hate meat. My doctor tells me to eat meat twice a week, as apparently we are cannibals."
Do you ever wish you had a son to pass on your wisdom to, to continue the Chanel heritage?
"That's the last thing I want. I hate all children."
"The good thing about private jets is that you go whenever you're ready. That's the real luxury of today. In all my contracts it says, if you want me, send a private jet. Also I cannot go on airlines because people stare at me, you have to be touched by people. I hate that."
