When a major black woman choreographer performs on our stages, it’s reason to rejoice but now it’s time for a fanfare, as five history-making women, Germaine Acogny, Carmen de Lavallade, Dianne McIntyre, Bebe Miller and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar present works in FLY: Five First Ladies of Dance at Long Island University’s Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts in Brooklyn on May 30-31.

The brainchild of 651 ARTS, now celebrating its 20th season, the festival includes five distinctive  artists: Urban Bush Women founder Zollar and African-born Acogny combine African and modern styles, while de Lavallade and McIntyre shine in theatrical dance, and Miller explores movement as a postmodernist. A true cornucopia of great artistry all in one exciting weekend.
