Kala Fellowship Artists’ Talk:
Randy Colosky, Alison OK Frost, Vanessa Marsh

Wednesday, June 27th, 7:00 pm
Kala Gallery
2990 San Pablo Av., Berkeley, CA 94702

Kala’s Fellowship Artists program includes an annual series of artists’ talks presented by current Fellows during their studio residencies. The month of June kicks off our annual series with presentations by Kala Fellows Randy Colosky, Alison Frost and Vanessa Marsh. The talk is free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Randy Colosky’s practice is both conceptual and material-driven. Subtle, thought-provoking and often witty, his work employs a free use of utilitarian and industrial materials and questions our assumptions of craft, art and design. In 2010, Secret Handshake, a survey of his work, was shown at Ampersand International. Randy’s first solo museum show FIAT LUX, was presented in the winter of 2011/2012 at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco.

Alison OK Frost paints watercolor scenes composed from often dystopic images she culls from news sources, old magazines, snapshots and movie stills. Her work’s use of watercolor--a medium often associated with lightness and sentimentality--presents a troubling and uneasy poignancy when juxtaposed with the dark subject matter developed in her scenes. Alison received her MFA in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work has been shown widely at spaces in the Bay Area and New York and was recently presented in the exhibition Myths of Progress, at Kala Gallery.

Vanessa Marsh builds small-scale models, which she combines with layered drawings on transparent acetate sheets to create photographic images of imaginary landscapes. Her quietly surreal images evoke a mysterious, in-between world, where planes of experience, and of memory and dream overlap. Vanessa’s work was most recently presented at the Nelson Gallery at U.C. Davis in addition to exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Art, Southern Exposure and San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.

Upcoming talks at Kala Gallery in July, August and September will include presentations by Fellows Michele Carlson, Seth Koen, Sandra Ono, Francesca Pastine and Gail Wight.
