I just saw the new Star Trek film and was blown away by how great it was. I am admittedly a huge sci-fi nerd, my favorite show being Battlestar Galactica, but Star Trek was sometimes a little too much for me. I was always more of a Star Wars girl, so when I heard it was coming out I was only hesitantly excited. The movie exceeded all of my expectations though and is probably my favorite film of the year so far. It was visually stunning, the costumes and set design were amazing, and most importantly it was accesible to people who aren't huge trekkies. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I came acrosse the work of Steve Schofield the other day while coming down from my Star Trek buzz. His work focuses on British people's obsession with American pop culture, in particular our subcultures and fandom. His series, "Land of the Free" explores trekkies, in costume while going about there regular daily schedual. I think the photo series is fun and really witty and the perfect thing to replace that framed movie poster you have had since college.
