There are many places on the web where you can download free pdf's of sheet music, but The Petrucci Music Library, formerly known as the International Music Score Library Project, is one of the most extensive and well-organized. The site is currently boasting over 43,000 scores, representing over 19,000 works by over 2,500 composers.

The Wiki-style site is very useful, especially if you are studying common-practice era music. It is all public domain, so you won't find stuff by modern composers here, unless they have uploaded it themselves.

Couple this with the Naxos Music Library, as mentioned in Alen's previous post, and you can have a score-study field day!
