Candice Breitz: Same Same at the Power Plant (Toronto)

I found out on the Saturday that the rehearsal Sunday would be cancelled-so I fumed, but decided to head into Toronto anyway. It’s an hour’s drive west, but any excuse to get into the city is a good one.  I got off at Union station, and went straight to the Power Plant to check out a new exhibition: Same Same by Candice Breitz. Breitz is concerned with investigations into identity as well as deconstructing the megalith that is contemporary media culture. What struck me about her work was the intelligent way that she uses the language of the entertainment industry such as that found in television, Hollywood films and pop music, in order to pry apart the construction and performance of the self that takes place within a globalized popular culture.
