"The Harder They Come" (1972): Jimmy Cliff stars as the main character based on notorious 1940's singer turned criminal, Rhyging. The film boasts a famous reggae soundtrack, and a smattering of cameos including Janet Bartley, Ras Daniel Hartman and Beverly Anderson.
"Wide Sargasso Sea" (1993): John Duigan's adaptation of Jean Rhys' book tells the story of a Creole heiress from her Caribbean upbringing to her marriage in England. A good model of postcolonial filmmaking, it tackles issues of assimilation, displacement and racial inequality.
"Dancehall Queen" (1997): Audrey Reid plays Marcia, a poor street vendor in Kingston, struggling to support her daughters, discovers her talent for dancehall.
