I first discovered Colette Wolff's amazing book, The Art of Manipulating Fabric, while working on my BFA in textile design. It was a life (and work) changing experience, and provided me with a whole new world of decorative sewing techniques for creating dimensional fabrics.
With this text, Wolff has created an encyclopedia of techniques that "...resurface, reshape, restructure, and reconstruct fabrics." The techniques are organized into different categories like gathering, smocking, ruffles, pleating, and quilting. In addition to providing beautiful instructional photos for executing the manipulations, Wolff has also provided an endless variety of variations on all techniques she has explained. Her style of writing is clear, concise, and easy to read.
This book is an essential addition to the library of any fashion designer or textile artist interested in seeking new sources of inspiration for what can be achieved through manipulating textiles. I highly recommend checking it out!
